SECOND GRADE – BASKETBALL UNIT

Lesson 1

DRIBBLING REVIEW: Part 1 – Warm up with a game or activity from your last unit. This activity should be all-inclusive and allow for the large muscles of the body to be active and get warmed up. Part 2 – Dribbling. You will probably have to review the 4 questions of the guided discovery lesson regarding basketball dribbling. Review rules regarding dribbling. Part 3 – Play some dribbling games.

Lesson 2

GUARDING A PLAYER WITH THE BALL: Part 1 – Warm up with a dribbling game that is all-inclusive and continuous for the entire warm up. Part 2 – Introduce the concept of Guarding a player with the ball. Guided discovery points should include; 1. What do you look at as you are guarding a player with the ball? (The ball) 2. Where do you position yourself when you are guarding the player with the ball? (As much as possible between the basket and the ball.) 3. What position should your body be in as you travel and move with the person with the ball? (The ready position, or a medium level) Action task to get the skill started: Have a cone and starting spot. One player starts dribbling toward the cone. The other player must get the ball, or cause the other player to stop before they get to the cone. Switch rolls each time one of the two things happen. Be sure that you allow enough time between questions to allow both partners to have a turn guarding. Part 3 – Play Dribble Keep away using the rules regarding dribbling and guarding. Any time a rule is broken you must give your ball to the nearest person without one. Play using all the other rules for dribble keep away as well.

Lesson 3

REVIEW PASSING TO A PARTNER: Part 1 – Review guarding a player with the ball. Play the game you used for part three last lesson. Part 2/3 – Review passing to a partner. Do some drills and play some games with passing & dribbling. (Again, games that the main objective is not defensive) You can also use stations for this lesson.

Lesson 4

GUARDING A PLAYER WITHOUT THE BALL: Part 1 – Set up stations that review the skills of passing and dribbling. Part 2 – Guarding a player without the ball. Discuss rules regarding defending a player. [AT] Play 2v2 keep away with passing only. If a team throws it out of bounds, breaks a basketball rule or turns the ball over, the other team gets the ball and my begin trying to keep it away from the other team of 2. Introduce the guided discovery points to guarding a player without the ball. 1. What do you look at as you are guarding a player without the ball? (The player and the ball) 2. Where do you position yourself when you are guarding the player with the ball? (As much as possible between the player you are guarding and the ball.) 3. What position should your body be in as you travel and move with the person with the ball? (The ready position, or a medium level) Be sure that you allow enough time between questions to allow both sets of partners to have a turn guarding. After a few minutes, introduce dribbling into the game. Part 3 – Play a game of 4v4 ultimate basketball. The field is rectangular, with two end lines and two sidelines. The object is to pass and dribble the ball down the field so that you can pass it to your teammate who must position themselves over the end line. If they catch it, your team scores a point and the other team begins the game again from the center of the court. If the other team steals the ball, or anyone on either team breaks a rule, the team who stole the ball, or did not commit the infraction gets to start from the point of the steal or infraction with a pass to his or her own teammate.

Lesson 5

REVIEW THE RULES OF BASKETBALL THAT APPLY TO DRIBBLING, PASSING AND GUARDING: Put the students in groups of 3 and have them create a game that they can play with three people, using passing and dribbling and the rules of basketball.Have the class try some of the games that turned out really cool from the last lesson. (Don’t be afraid to let your kids be a little creative’ They come up with great and not so great ideas, be willing to accept anything as long as its safe and meets your limits)

Lesson 6

SHOOTING SKILLS: Begin with hoops clipped or taped to a wall/fence. Work on what to look at, stepping and follow through, etc. Relate shooting to passing, as far as basic skill. The guided discovery questions in the book for passing should be reviewed as well as introducing the specific question regarding aiming at the hoop. Part 3 – Practice dribbling around room space, as you come up to a hoop, stop and shoot. The hoops should be higher during this lesson than when you were working on passing. You can also use regular baskets if your school has at least 4. You can still supplement the regular hoops with some stations that have hoops clipped to the fence.

Lesson 7

SHOOTING GAMES OR DRILLS: Part 1 – Play one of the games that your class created in lesson five. Part 2/3 – Review the points of shooting. Discuss rules regarding shooting. Play games with shooting that use the real baskets. Horse, Around the world, etc.

Lesson 8

PLAY A 2V2 GAME: Part 1 – Practice all four skills: Dribble, Passing, Shooting and guarding. Use stations to do this so that you can isolate each skill. Part 2/3 – Play a 2v2 game with the hoops on the walls, using rules of basketball that have been introduced so far.
