Second Grade – STX Ball Unit

SECOND GRADE – STX Ball

(Any reference to scoopers implies the use of the HI LI Scoopers.)

Lesson 1

THROW AND CATCH TO TARGETS AND SELF, USING SCOOPERS: Part 1 – Warm up with a fun flag game. Part 2 (see the activity in the book regarding throwing and catching and wrist flick). – “Get a scooper and a ball and find an own space. In your own space, practice throwing the ball up in the air with the scooper, and then catching it with the scooper when it comes back down to you.” 1. What do you look at to catch the ball? (The ball) 2. Where should the tip of the scooper be pointing when the ball rolls off, if you want it to go up into the air and back down to your own space? (Up into the air, the direction you want the ball to go.) Part 3 – Practice throwing the ball to a wall and catching it. Practice throwing it up in the air and catching it; practice throwing it up in the air, letting it bounce and then catching it. There are ball handling station cards that would work with this practice, just remind the students that the throwing and catching should be done with the scooper.

Lesson 2

THROW AND CATCH WITH A PARNTER USING SCOOPERS REVIEW: Part 1 – Stations that work on throwing with the scoopers. Part 2 – Practice throwing and catching with a partner. Be sure to review the points of catching and using two hands. Use whiffle balls, and explain the act of catching the ball on a bounce or a roll (in case the throw from the partner is not perfect!) Part 3 – Move and catch. Set up situations so that the partners will throw and catch on the run.

Lesson 3

GAURDING A PLAYER WITH THE BALL: Part 1 – Warm up with a partner cooperation game. Part 2 – [AT] One partner gets a beanbag and two scoopers, the other partner get a marker and a hoop and find a working space. One partner will take the ball in their scooper and try to run with the ball beginning at the marker trying to get the beanbag into the hoop. The other partner will try to keep them from getting to the hoop and completing the task. Neither partner can touch the other. 1. When you are trying to keep the player from getting to another place, but you cannot touch them, what can you do with your body to try to do this? (Stay in their way with your body.) 2. Where in relation to the bucket should you place your body as you are trying to stay in their way? (Between the player and the bucket.) 3. What can you do with your arms and hands to make it more difficult for the player to get the ball inside the bucket? (Wave them around, up and down, sideways, making it difficult to get a clear shot at the bucket.) Part 3 – 2v1 Keep away game.

Lesson 4

GAURDING A PLAYER WITHOUT THE BALL: Part 1 – Play a game of 2v1 Keep away. Part 2 – Stay in your groups of three. [AT] Three people. 1. One person with the ball, 2. One person guarding the person without the ball and 3. One player who doesn’t have the ball, but is trying to get open to get the ball. Players 1&3 are on the same team. Player two is trying to see how long they can keep player three from getting the ball. If the third player gets the ball, or player two gets the ball, switch rolls. If I blow my whistle, switch rolls anyway. Questions for part 2; 1. What do you look at when you are trying to keep the player from getting the ball? (you must know where the ball is and where the player is.) 2. Where is the best place to position your body when you are trying to keep the player from getting open to catch a pass? (Between the ball and the player.) What can your arms and hands do to help block the player from getting the ball? (They can be up and down, wide, moving around. This will make it difficult to pass around.) Why do you think it is important to guard a player who doesn’t even have the ball? (Because if they get the ball, they will be free to try to score.) Part 3 – 2v2 Keep Away or Ultimate Game.

Lesson 5

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 2/3 – Review parachute basics and safety with your class. There are various ways and activities that you can use to begin parachute activities. There is a video that you can watch to see basic activities and get an idea for set up. Any activities that ask the students to move ON the parachute should only be done in the grass or in the gym. DO NOT allow the students to move on top of the parachute while it is on the black top. Also NEVER carry or lift students on the parachute. There is music available with a narrator on the Rhythm and Moves, Movement CD #3. Begin talking about safety and how to handle the parachute. The Parachute Play skills introduce a couple skills per session. You can review some of the skills that you did with kindergarten this lesson

Lesson 6

SHOOTING & GOAL TENDING: Part 1 – Warm up with a game of 2v2 keep away! Part 2 – Shooting is basically throwing to a target, which you covered in the first lesson. After verbally reviewing shooting with your class, (be sure to tell them about the rules regarding shooting for STX Ball.) move on to goal tending. Be sure the class understands what the goalie can and cannot do, as well as the points regarding defending the goal. Have the partners practice the points by taking turns shooting against each other. Part 3 – Half the partners will go around the space shooting at the goalies. They may not shoot at a goal if there is already someone shooting. Be sure to introduce the rule about not shooting from inside the crease. After a couple minutes of shooting, switch roles so that everyone gets a chance being goalie and shooter.

Lesson 7

2v2 ULTIMATE STX BALL: Part 1 – Warm up with a fitness work out. Part 2/3 – Ultimate Lacrosse. Rules, 1. No player may touch another player (Free pass for person who was touched. That means no one can be closer than 10 feet away, except the teammate. ) 2. Stay in the boundaries. (Free throw in bounds for the team that did not carry the ball out of bounds.) 3. No player may steal the ball out of the scooper, or hit it out of the scooper. (Free pass for the team that had the ball hit or taken out of the scooper.) The object of the game is to pass and run with the ball to your scoring end of the court. Pass the ball to your teammate. If they catch the ball over the end line, you will score a point. You cannot run the ball over the end line. If the ball is run over the end line, it is not a goal, but play does not have to stop, the team can run or pass it back inside the field and then try to pass it over. If the ball is not caught from a fly over the end line it does not count either, but again, depending on who gets the ball, the play can continue and the team trying to score can try to throw it over again.
